Instagram Photo Contest Winner Announced

The Riffe Gallery is pleased to announce the winner of the Photography's Back to the Future Instagram photography contest winner: Mary Ann Sedivy of Newbury, Ohio.

Her Instagram photo of a spring storm over a parking lot (above) was chosen by show curator Catherine Evans, the William and Sarah Ross Soter Curator of Photography at the Columbus Museum of Art, as the winner of the Riffe Gallery's first-ever Instagram photography contest.

"I was drawn to the image for its dramatic skyscape, and...thought the image, while grounded in a recognizable, generic, mid-western space, hit that sweet spot between the real and the operatic," Evans said of Sedivy's photograph.

"I chose this shot from several others as illustrating the theme, Photography's Back to the Future, because there is such a dramatic contrast between the realism of the subject matter beneath the clouds – which seems so ordinary and mundane – versus the surging, roiling sky above," Sedivy said. "It's as if there is a weird sci-fi future hovering above an ordinary day."

As a prize, Sedivy, a high school art teacher, will receive a signed copy of Evans' book, The Radical Camera: New York's Photo League 1936-1951.

Poetics of Pattern
July 25 - October 6, 2013

We are surrounded by patterns. As human beings we instinctively seek patterns and create patterns – subconsciously or deliberately – as a way to understand and organize our complex and chaotic lives. Curated by Janice Lessman-Moss, professor at Kent State University, the 13 artists in Poetics of Pattern present a broad platform of pattern used as process, decoration, and structure in ways that are organic, geometric, intuitive, cumulative, meditative and even phenomological.  Embracing a range of concepts and poetic interpretations, the 13 artists in this exhibition produce exciting new work that reflects the many facets of pattern.

Join the Riffe Gallery for the free, opening reception of Poetics of Pattern with on Thursday, July 25 from 5 to 7 p.m. Donated food will be available.

On Friday, July 26 curator Janice Lessman-Moss will lead a free tour of the exhibition from noon to 1 p.m.

This exhibition is presented by the Ohio Arts Council's Riffe Gallery with media support from CD102.5, CityScene, Ohio Channel, Ohio Magazine, Time Warner Cable and WCBE 90.5FM.
