Ohio Arts Council Seeking Communications Strategist (Public Information Officer)

The Ohio Arts Council is seeking a talented communications professional with experience in social media management, journalism and written communications, and videography/photography to join its operations and public affairs team.

In general, the chosen candidate will collaboratively plan, manage, and execute a variety of styles of communications work. The candidate will demonstrate versatility in written communications, able to write for a variety of audiences (e.g., the general public, arts administrators, elected officials) through a variety of platforms and techniques (e.g., social media, feature articles, media releases, video). In addition, the chosen candidate will act as the Ohio Arts Council’s primary staffer responsible for videography and photography, as presented through the agency’s social media and website.

The chosen candidate will oversee preparation and dissemination of informational material reflecting agency activities and perform related program activities. Lastly, the chosen candidate will assist with special events and conferences, ranging from the agency’s annual arts awards luncheon to biennial statewide conferences. Tasks may include drafting marketing plans, assisting with promotional materials, arranging logistics, taking event photo or video, editing written materials, and performing other duties as assigned.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Writing, editing, and sharing social media content on major social network platforms
  • Writing, editing, and performing layout work on publications, articles, blog posts, and electronic newsletters
  • Developing, preparing, proofing, and issuing media releases
  • Writing, editing, managing, and arranging content on agency’s website
  • Developing and presenting informational reports, programs, materials, and/or speeches
  • Managing the agency’s voice, tone, and brand in agency-wide writing and communications
  • Assisting with coordination of special projects and events

Qualifications:
Completion of undergraduate core program in journalism or communication; 6 mos. exp. in public multi-media techniques & relations in field of journalism or communication; valid driver's license.

  • Or 30 mos. exp. in field of journalism or communication dealing in public multi-media techniques & relations, public speaking, news writing, reporting & editing or technical report translation & communication dealing in public meetings; valid driver's license.
  • Or 12 mos. exp. as Public Information Specialist, 64420; valid driver's license.
  • Or equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.

Knowledge of public relations; journalism (e.g., newswriting, reporting & editing); communication (e.g., multi-media techniques); budgeting; supervisory principles/techniques*; management*. Skill in typing or word processing. Ability to deal with many variables & determine specific action; prepare & deliver speeches to specialized audiences & general public; use proper research methods in gathering data; write &/or edit articles for publication; handle sensitive inquiries from & contacts with officials & general public.
