11 January Ohio Arts Organizations and Artists Receive More Than $1M from the National Endowment for the Arts January 11, 2022 For Organizations, For the Public, NEA, News Arts Projects, Challenge America, Creative Writing Fellowship, Grants, National Endowment for the Arts, NEA, Ohio, Research Grants 0 The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded 45 grants totaling $1,065,000 to Ohio, the NEA announced in a media release on Tuesday. As part of its first round of funding for fiscal year 2022, the federal agency said it has recommended 1,498 arts grants nationwide totaling nearly $33.2 million. “These National Endowment for the Arts grants underscore the resilience of our nation’s artists and arts organizations, will support efforts to provide access to the arts, and rebuild the creative economy,” said NEA Acting Chair Ann Eilers in the release. “The supported projects demonstrate how the arts are a source of strength and well-being to communities and individuals, and can open doors to conversations that address complex issues of our time.” Most of the Ohio awards were distributed through the NEA’s Arts Projects program, its principal grants program for organizations. According to the release, Arts Projects grants are awarded in 15 artistic disciplines to “reach communities in all parts of the country, large and small, and with diverse cultural and economic backgrounds.” Arts Projects grants for organizations in Ohio range from $10,000 to $60,000 to support arts programs and initiatives throughout the state. Six Ohio nonprofits received Challenge America grants, which award $10,000 to “offer support primarily to small and mid-sized organizations for projects that extend the reach of the arts to populations that have limited access to them due to geography, ethnicity, economics, or disability,” the release stated. Additionally, three Ohio research institutions—Cleveland’s Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth System, as well as the Ohio State University in Columbus—were awarded NEA Research Grants in the Arts. According to the release, these grants fund “research studies that analyze the value and/or impact of the arts.” Ohio awards distributed in this program for FY 2022 range from $30,000 to $85,000. One Ohioan, Elliott Holt of Columbus, was selected to receive an NEA Creative Writing Fellowship for her work in prose. As part of the FY 2022 cohort of 35 creative writing fellows, Holt will receive $25,000, which, the release explains, allows writers to “set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career development.” Ohio Arts Council Executive Director Donna S. Collins expressed gratitude for the NEA’s support of Ohio artists and arts organizations, who she commended for achieving national honors. “On behalf of the Ohio Arts Council, we congratulate all recipients of grant awards from the National Endowment for the Arts,” Collins said. “This recognition from the national level is a testament to the strength and quality of the arts in Ohio—from the artists who create and perform work, to the organizations and educators who enable success—all to the benefit of our state’s creative economy.” A list organized by city of Ohio organizations receiving National Endowment for the Arts funding follows: Blacklick Educational Foundation for Freedom | Challenge America ($10,000) Cincinnati Children’s Theatre of Cincinnati | Grants for Arts Projects - Musical Theatre ($10,000) Cincinnati Ballet | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($10,000) Cincinnati Opera Association | Grants for Arts Projects – Opera ($25,000) Cincinnati Shakespeare Company | Grants for Arts Projects – Theatre ($10,000) Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra | Grants for Arts Projects – Music ($40,000) Cincinnati Youth Choir | Challenge America ($10,000) Contemporary Arts Center | Grants for Arts Projects – Museums ($60,000) Kennedy Heights Art Center | Challenge America ($10,000) Cleveland Apollo’s Fire Baroque Orchestra | Grants for Arts Projects – Music ($40,000) Case Western Reserve University | Research Grants in the Arts ($75,000) CityMusic Cleveland | Grants for Arts Projects – Music ($10,000) Cleveland Institute of Music | Grants for Arts Projects – Opera ($15,000) DANCECleveland | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($20,000) Cleveland Museum of Art | Grants for Arts Projects – Museums ($40,000) Cleveland Public Theatre | Grants for Arts Projects – Theatre ($25,000) Tri-C Foundation | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($10,000) Tri-C Foundation (on behalf of Tri-C JazzFest Cleveland) | Grants for Arts Projects – Music ($20,000) Front Exhibition Company | Grants for Arts Projects - Media Arts ($10,000) Greater Cleveland Urban Film Foundation | Grants for Arts Projects - Media Arts ($20,000) GroundWorks Dancetheater | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($10,000) Karamu House | Grants for Arts Projects – Theatre ($30,000) L.A.N.D. studio | Grants for Arts Projects – Design ($30,000) Les Délices | Challenge America ($10,000) MetroHealth System | Research Grants in the Arts ($85,000) Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland | Grants for Arts Projects – Museums ($40,000) The Cleveland Orchestra | Grants for Arts Projects – Music ($40,000) SPACES | Grants for Arts Projects - Visual Arts ($35,000) Union Miles Development Corporation | Challenge America ($10,000) Columbus BalletMet | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($10,000) Harmony Project Productions | Grants for Arts Projects - Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works ($35,000) Elliott Holt | Literature Fellowships: Creative Writing - Literary Arts ($25,000) Maroon Arts Group | Grants for Arts Projects - Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works ($25,000) Ohio State University | Research Grants in the Arts ($30,000) OhioDance | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($10,000) Opera Columbus | Grants for Arts Projects – Opera ($20,000) Wexner Center for the Arts | Grants for Arts Projects - Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works ($35,000) Dayton Dayton Contemporary Dance Company | Grants for Arts Projects – Dance ($15,000) Gambier Kenyon Review | Grants for Arts Projects - Literary Arts ($10,000) Marion Marion County Historical Society | Grants for Arts Projects - Folk & Traditional Arts ($20,000) Millersburg Holmes Center for the Arts | Grants for Arts Projects - Presenting & Multidisciplinary Works ($10,000) Richmond Heights Lylesart | Challenge America ($10,000) Springfield Springfield Museum of Art | Grants for Arts Projects – Museums ($20,000) Westcott House Foundation | Grants for Arts Projects – Design ($20,000) Youngstown Youngstown Playhouse | Grants for Arts Projects – Theatre ($10,000) For more information about NEA grant programs, visit arts.gov.
